Healthcare and Technology

Technology is essential in the health care system. The use of information and communication technology in nursing is inevitable as it is a worldwide phenomenon. It opens up many doors for health care professional as well as patients. The advancement in technology is necessary to keep up with the ever evolving changes in research, knowledge, demand and communications in all industries throughout the world. Without these advancements the health care system would become ineffective and inefficient. There are defiantly flaws in the system, as not all health care facilities have the dollars to advance their systems to keep up with evolving changes. This can frustrate many older nurses that are already finding the computers challenging, therefore they may indeed find that computers hinders their communications at times.

Great blog entry Nikki!

My experience is in Public Health Services Research so I too share a passion for the healthcare industry. Two examples of advancement in health care technology is the use of Telemedicine and Electronic Medical Records. Here in the states, both are a major focus as we strive to make our system less complex and more efficient. It is my understanding that the diffusion of technology into Canadian facilities is much slower than for American facilities. On the other hand, we have a mess of a system here in the states and it is more difficult to improve the quality, cost, and access than the Canadian system. Although both systems are quite different, every healthcare system shares the same responsibility of providing the best quality of care to their patients.
You are right in saying that the advances in technology are inevitable. Besides this, it is often disheartening to older Nurses that have never had to rely on technology. Although they struggle with this, these nurses play a critical role in the transferring of knowledge to the newly graduated nurses.

Those are just my thoughts :)
