Technology is essential in the health care system. The use of information and communication technology in nursing is inevitable as it is a worldwide phenomenon. It opens up many doors for health care professional as well as patients. The advancement in technology is necessary to keep up with the ever evolving changes in research, knowledge, demand and communications in all industries throughout the world. Without these advancements the health care system would become ineffective and inefficient. There are defiantly flaws in the system, as not all health care facilities have the dollars to advance their systems to keep up with evolving changes. This can frustrate many older nurses that are already finding the computers challenging, therefore they may indeed find that computers hinders their communications at times.

Did you Know?

Hello everyone,

Here is some news you may or may not want to know. Yesterday a 13 year old girl came into emerge because she found a 6 inch worm in her stool. This was something I thought you would only see in a third world country. The doctor assured me that yes! it is seen here in Canada. So.... wash your hands! before you eat, especially after using public bathrooms. I will not post a picture as I feel it will ruin my blog. I have added above this post, a link to a great web site that shows the cycle of the worm, how it enters the body and finally the treatment for it. There are some great pictures as well.

Teach your Children to be Safe!

My children do not like that I work in the emergency department as a nurse. If they were to describe my parenting style, I think they would compare me to "Marlin",the clown fish from the movie Nemo. Each shift I work, I see children that have injured themselves; many of these injuries could have be prevented. This blog list a few cases that I have seen at work and probably contributes to how I parent at home. "Oh don't do that!", "Be careful!", "That's not safe!".
This is not meant to scare you, just think!
Cases:

• 18 month old child required16 stitches in the face from yes, a Golden Retriever! One of the most common things we hear is "He has never bitten before".
• 4 year old child was reaching for a book, stood on the bottom shelf and down came the bookshelf ! "Nail them to the wall"
• 3 year old child was in Daddy's car while he was washing it and put the car into neutral. The car rolled backwards and landed on the neighbor's front grass. Luckily the child only ended up with 2 stitches. The sad part of the story is that Dad saw it happening and tried to stop the car from rolling and the car ran over him. He had some serious injuries, but was okay.
• 8 year old child standing behind Dad as he was batting at a baseball game. Dad threw the bat and hit the child in the face. (Took the child's first 4 front teeth out!)
  
• 9 year old riding down a set of stairs with bike and no helmet. "Boys will be boys!"

It only took a few minutes to jot down a busy week in emerge. I could go on and on, but what I really want to instill here is that you need to teach your children to be aware of their surrounding. They are their own best defense against accidents.

Children's Health Safety

Well I am back, and I have to admit that I was a little hard on blogging. It is not so bad, and yes, it can be informative. I was trying to think of a way of how I could benefit from blogging, while keeping my communication teacher happy with the relevance to nursing. So I decided to combined the two things I love most; children and caring for people. I dedicate these next few blogs to anyone who has small children that do not have the health background to make informative decision regarding the safety and health of their children.

I do not want to Blog!!!

You are probably wondering why I do not want to blog. For me it is a personal reason. I am a mother of 3 beautiful children with a wonderful husband. That right there should answer your question, but if it doesn't read on.............

I am not ignorant to the fact that computers are a part of our lives and that we need to know the in and outs of them. I understand that they are part of our working daily lives and my children are going to utilized them even more than I ever have. That still does not explain why I need to go online and journal my daily, weekly, yearly events. I really don't care what you are doing, nor should you care what I am doing!! In this particular crazy time in my life, with returning back to school for my degree, working part time, raising 3 children and committing to a marriage that is so important to me, I do not want to spend what little time I have creating journal entries so my friends and family can see how chaotic my life is right now. Sounds a bit like whining if you ask me!! The fact is my teacher has asked me to create a blog, along with a few journal entries for my communication class. With these entries I will be able to support why I do not want to blog.



p.s. In the time that It took me to create this blog, I could have read 5 to 6 books with my son and gone for a 30 min run. Hmmmmm!......spending time with my 5 year old child and living a healthy life, or whining on the computer! that's a hard one! What is this world coming too!
